We took the train to Ostbahnhof to see the East Side Gallery, a 1 km plus section of the Berlin Wall painted by a variety of renowned artists as a memorial to freedom.
Heroic tales of ingenuity in escaping communist oppression were on display at the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie. From complicated pulley assemblies to hot air balloons to doubling over in specialized luggage, people went to great lengths to escape from the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik). Heart wrenching stories of mothers separated from their children, families torn apart, and casualties of oppression are remembered here.
Checkpoint Charlie was the dividing line between the US and Russian sectors of Berlin during the Cold War era. Now we can walk from side to side with ease.
